Yves Gaucher made this colour block painting, RB/PS 2 – 15, with what looks like acrylic on canvas. Imagine Gaucher working on this in his studio. The process is probably very simple, right? But so is the outcome. I am so curious about how he made this artwork. Did he tape it off to get the lines so clean? I wonder what kind of surface the canvas has. It seems smooth, but my eyes might be deceiving me. The colours are beautiful. It’s like the painting is all about harmony, and making an atmosphere that's quiet and still. Something about this painting makes me think of Agnes Martin’s work, because they share such an interest in exploring subtle gradations of colour and form. Looking at this piece, I'm reminded that painting is a dialogue between artists. It’s all about exploring, questioning, and responding to each other’s ideas. The way Gaucher handles colour invites us to slow down and see the world in new ways, with uncertainty and ambiguity.
