Curatorial notes

This is a portrait of Nicolaas Tulp, made with etching by Jan de Bisschop in the Dutch Golden Age. But who was Tulp, and why commemorate him? Tulp was a prominent surgeon, anatomist, and mayor of Amsterdam. The painting plays into this notion of civic importance. The chair he sits on is adorned with regal embellishments, suggesting an air of prestige and authority. The etching presents a visualization of Tulp's social standing and invites us to consider the relationship between science, power, and representation in 17th-century Dutch society. To understand this image better, research into Tulp's career and the role of physicians in Dutch society would be beneficial. Examination of visual culture from the period, such as emblems and allegorical prints, could illuminate the symbolic language employed in this portrait. This etching thus offers an opportunity to explore how individuals and institutions sought to shape their image through art.
