Dirk Jurriaan Sluyter created this engraving, "Genezing van de blinde van Jericho," using lines to delineate form and shadow. The composition is arranged with a clear foreground, where the central figures enact the healing, against a soft background hinting at a landscape. Sluyter masterfully uses line and texture to highlight the dramatic moment. Note how the density of lines creates darker tones that give depth and volume to the figures. In contrast, the lighter areas draw our attention to the divine act, thus directing our gaze to a crucial interplay between the seen and unseen. This work functions as a narrative and also provides a study in contrasts—light versus shadow, clarity versus ambiguity. Here, the artist invites us to reflect on the relationship between visual representation and faith. We must look beyond the surface to find a deeper understanding of its meaning.
