Editor: This is Gianantonio Lorenzini’s "Calling of Andrew," currently residing at the Harvard Art Museums. The composition feels very dynamic, almost theatrical. What do you see in this piece, particularly in terms of its visual structure? Curator: The piece, viewed through a Formalist lens, presents a fascinating study in contrasts. Observe the curvature of the arch at the top, subtly mirrored by the shoreline below. The artist’s line work uses shadow to divide the composition, creating depth and guiding the viewer’s eye. Editor: So the curved lines and strategic use of shadow are key to understanding the work's impact? Curator: Precisely. The dynamism you noted is a direct result of these structural choices. Consider how the figures are arranged; their poses, too, contribute to the overall sense of movement and drama. What do you make of their placement? Editor: The figure in the boat seems to be working, while another kneels before Christ. The contrast in posture is certainly striking. I hadn't considered how much the artist played with the geometry. Thank you.
