Curatorial notes

This woodblock print of a dance performance was created by Katsushika Hokusai, a famous Japanese artist of the Edo period. It encapsulates a scene of entertainment, giving us a glimpse into the cultural life of the time. Hokusai masterfully uses spatial arrangement to create a voyeuristic perspective. We observe both the performers and the audience; the shadows on the screen hint at another level of observation. This print reflects the Edo period's flourishing arts scene and the increasing popularity of entertainment. It also subtly hints at the rigid social structure, with a clear distinction between performers and observers. To fully understand Hokusai’s work, we delve into the history of Japanese art, the social dynamics of the Edo period, and the rise of the merchant class, who were key patrons of the arts. Examining these factors enriches our appreciation of Hokusai's art.
