Hito Steyerl’s ‘The Tower’ is an installation work involving video, furniture, and architectural interventions. There’s an intense and almost oppressive consistency to the colour red here, which is so immersive. It almost feels like you're standing inside someone's head! The installation embraces the material qualities of the space, drawing our attention to texture and colour. The fuzzy, sound-dampening squares on the wall, for example, not only shape the room visually, but also create a very specific acoustic environment. Look closely at the screens. The high-rise architectural video shows the tower from different perspectives, and this gives us a sense of its form in space. Steyerl is creating a conversation between physical and virtual spaces. Much like the work of Dan Graham, she uses the material to encourage a philosophical and playful approach to her art. It’s not about fixed meanings, but about seeing the world in new ways.
