Johann Sadeler’s engraving captures the Holy Family during their flight into Egypt. The most striking symbol here is that of the nursing Madonna, ‘Maria Lactans,’ a motif stretching back to ancient Egypt, where images of Isis nursing Horus were common. This image resonates deeply, tapping into primal memories of nourishment and safety. The act of breastfeeding transcends mere sustenance; it embodies the sacred bond between mother and child. We see echoes of this motif in Byzantine icons, reinforcing its spiritual significance. Yet, even in secular contexts, the nurturing mother figure remains a powerful archetype. Over time, the ‘Maria Lactans’ evolved, sometimes becoming controversial due to changing cultural attitudes towards the body. Yet, its enduring appeal speaks to our collective longing for maternal comfort and unconditional love. This image continues to resurface, transformed yet recognizable, reminding us of the cyclical nature of symbols.
