Christoffel van Sichem II created this woodcut, depicting ‘Christus verschijnt aan Maria Magdalena,’ or Christ Appearing to Mary Magdalene, sometime between 1581 and 1658. During the early 17th century, the Dutch Republic was experiencing a time of religious and political upheaval. Van Sichem, working within this environment, presents us with an intimate, yet theologically charged, scene. Mary Magdalene kneels before the resurrected Christ, her posture conveying a mix of awe and supplication. This moment, rich with emotional and spiritual significance, is rendered within a cultural context grappling with questions of faith, authority, and individual experience. How might this representation challenge or reinforce traditional notions of gender and religious authority? What does it mean to depict this encounter in a rapidly changing society, one questioning established hierarchies? Consider the emotionality of this biblical scene, and how it might resonate differently depending on one's social position.
