Curator: Isn’t this “Homage to Modern Art,” a collaboration between Ian Hamilton Finlay and Jim Nicholson, just lovely? A bit melancholic, perhaps, given the muted tones. Editor: Yes, the grey and brown palette certainly evokes a sense of maritime solemnity. The geometric stylization, though, brings forth questions about the romanticization of naval power and its legacy within modern art. Curator: I find the simplified shapes almost childlike, but that sharp yellow triangle really grabs the eye. What do you make of that? Editor: It seems to me that the triangle is a modernist symbol, but the historical context of naval flags and their association with colonialism must be considered. Curator: I hadn't thought of it that way. It’s funny how a simple image can hold so much. Editor: Indeed. It urges us to interrogate the intersection of aesthetics and the socio-political narratives they represent. Curator: Well, it’s certainly given me something to ponder! Editor: And perhaps challenges us to navigate art with both critical awareness and imaginative curiosity.

This work combines Finlay’s fondness for maritime imagery with his mischievously ironic references to art history. The abstract motif, suggestive of modern art, is incorporated into an image that resembles an old-fashioned illustration and therefore the opposite of everything popularly associated with ‘modern art’. At the same time, the lone boat suggests something of the heroic spirit of the pioneering modernist artist. Gallery label, July 2008
