Curatorial notes

This print of Gaspar de Bracamonte y Guzman was made by Jan Frederik Christiaan Reckleben, probably in the Netherlands, sometime in the mid-19th century. Prints like this one existed within a complex social and institutional world. On the one hand, portraits have a long and fascinating history as records of the social elite. But this is no painting commissioned by its subject to display in a private gallery. It is a print: one of many, made to be distributed. Note the inscription below the image, the typographic style, and the rigid grid in the background. Taken together, these features suggest the world of the archive and the library. In this context, we can understand the image as part of a project to create a public record of important historical figures. The work of the art historian involves looking closely at the intersection between these kinds of visual codes and the institutions and social structures that give them meaning. Old books, newspapers and institutional records can all shed light on the cultural work performed by images like this.
