J.F. Clemens made this print, Jordkuglen rullende mellem skyer, which translates as 'The Globe Rolling Between Clouds', using engraving. It’s an image made of lines, masses of lines. The more I look, the more the lines make me feel like I’m in the clouds too, floating. Looking closely, you can see how the lines build up to create the form of the globe, the texture of the clouds, and the drama of the light. See that burst of sunshine, the way it cuts through the clouds and illuminates the world? It's so hopeful, right? There’s this tiny sheep in the lower left, almost hidden in the clouds. It’s like a little secret, a bit of pastoral calm amid all this swirling energy. There’s a similar sense of swirling energy in the work of William Blake, and the interest in light and clouds in the work of Turner. You get the sense of art as an ongoing conversation. Like this piece, it embraces ambiguity and invites us to bring our own interpretations.
