Sigmund Löw captured this photograph of the Dam Square in Amsterdam during Wilhelmina's inauguration as queen. The late 19th century was a time of immense social change in Europe, with growing nationalist sentiments and shifts in gender roles. Here, we see a meticulously staged public spectacle, designed to solidify the monarchy's image. Yet, the presence of a female monarch was in itself a progressive notion, challenging traditional power structures. Wilhelmina’s ascension occurred in a period where women's roles were being renegotiated, reflecting a tension between inherited power and evolving social norms. Consider the implications of photographing such an event; Löw documents a carefully constructed moment of national unity. The image evokes a sense of collective identity, but it also invites us to question whose stories are being told and whose are being left out. Löw's photograph serves as a reminder that even the most orchestrated displays of power are deeply intertwined with the complex and often contradictory currents of their time.
