This image of Postplatz with the Cholerabrunnen in Dresden was captured by Rudolph Tamme at an unknown date using photographic methods. Looking at this scene, I imagine Tamme carefully composing his shot, considering the light and the activity of the square. It's like he’s painting with light, etching the details of daily life onto the photographic plate. He had to stand there with all those horse-drawn carriages and trams. I wonder what he was thinking as he immortalized this moment in time, capturing the hustle and bustle of Dresden in his frame. I imagine him later in the darkroom, developing the image and watching the scene emerge from the chemicals. Photography is a conversation with the past, each image a bridge connecting us to the lives and experiences of those who came before. Each photographer builds on what has come before. It’s about possibilities and thinking about what we can make with technology, embracing uncertainty and finding new ways to make images.
