Curatorial notes

This ornament with Agnus Dei and papal coat of arms was created by Maximilian Joseph Limpach. The artwork presents a circular emblem with a lamb, framed by an elaborate, symmetrical cartouche, etched with meticulous detail. The composition is visually dominated by the contrast between the central, self-contained circle and the flamboyant, outward-spiraling ornamentation that surrounds it. The lines are sharp, creating a textural interplay of light and shadow that gives the print a sculptural quality. The emblem’s structure, juxtaposing the sacred Agnus Dei within an ornamental frame, highlights a tension between the spiritual and the decorative. This tension can be interpreted through a semiotic lens, where the lamb represents religious purity, and the ornate frame suggests the institutional power of the papacy. Limpach’s work destabilizes a singular meaning. The artist invites us to consider how symbols of faith are mediated through artistic form.
