This photograph captures Eugen Wachenheimer and his wife, Else, in evening wear, surrounded by unknown individuals. There is something so interesting in these found images, the stark tonal range has something that makes it feel almost like a drawing. It’s fascinating to see how the light and shadow play, really carving out the scene. The textures are almost palpable, the glossy sheen of the outfits and the softness of the patterned carpet contrasting with the formal setting. And it is through this combination of tones that we are drawn into the scene, into the evening. I find myself thinking about the artist Atget, also working around this time, documenting the streets of Paris. There is a similar tone and feel to the work. The photograph embraces ambiguity, inviting us to imagine our own narratives within its frame.
