J.F. Clemens created this engraving titled "Lykkens Tempel", or Temple of Fortune. The print invites us to consider how Clemens orchestrates a visual narrative through the formal elements of composition and line. Note the temple's architecture, rendered with precise lines, flanking figures which lead your eye up the steps to the doorway. However, the figures on the staircase are destabilized. Some climb, some fall, some have even given up. The symmetry of the temple clashes with the chaotic scene unfolding before it, revealing how Clemens undermines the ideals of order and rationality. What does the temple represent? This neoclassical structure serves as a stage where human hopes meet chance, and where rational structures crumble under the weight of chaotic human experience. This tension between order and disorder highlights the structural underpinnings of human ambition. It suggests that, in Clemens' view, our pursuit of 'fortune' is as precarious as it is inevitable.
