Max Liebermann made this drawing of an interior with three reading figures using graphite on paper. It looks like he’s figuring something out, working through an idea, just like I do when I am painting. The texture comes from the rapid, sketchy strokes, which give the impression of movement and a fleeting moment. Look how he uses the side of the graphite to add shadow to the figures’ clothing. The physical act of drawing is totally evident, especially in the loose, almost scribbled lines defining the background. Notice the figure on the left, bent over the table, practically diving into the book. The others seem equally engrossed, each lost in their private literary world. I am reminded of Adolph Menzel’s drawings from the same period, where the everyday is elevated. Both artists capture the energy of modern life through active mark making.
