G-P. Joumard made this magazine cover in 1925, and it looks like the colours were applied a little like stencils. It’s so graphic, you could almost imagine it as a screenprint! I love how the colours create shapes, and shapes create forms in this piece. Take the figure on the left, her dress is constructed from blocks of black, grey and white, built on a beautiful warm beige surface. The fan she holds is just a semi-circle in a green tone. It’s like the artist is creating a jigsaw of colour, and somehow, it totally works as an image. And who does this remind me of? Maybe someone like Erté, who also loved the fashionable woman as a subject. For me, work like this is a great reminder that art is a conversation.
