Curatorial notes
This drawing of a rider followed by a man on foot, both in period attire, was made by Dankvart Dreyer. The figures evoke a sense of journey or quest. The rider, elevated and in control atop his steed, contrasts with the man walking beside him. This echoes ancient motifs of nobility and servitude, deeply embedded in our cultural memory. Think of equestrian statues throughout history, symbols of power and authority. Here, however, Dreyer presents a softer image, a more intimate portrayal. We see the 'pathos formula' in action: the visual language of emotion passed down through generations. The figures' positioning suggests a story, a relationship dynamic, drawing us into their world. In contemplating this image, consider how the interplay between rider and follower resonates with our own experiences of leadership, dependence, and the perpetual human journey through life.
