Jerzy Nowosielski made this painting, Sunrise in Bieszczady, which is probably oil on canvas. Look at how he's laid out the landscape like a map, but a map of feelings, not places. The color palette here is so earthy, greens and browns that feel both familiar and strange all at once. It's like he's trying to capture not just what the landscape looks like, but how it makes you feel, deep down in your gut. The paint itself is applied in these flat, almost geometric shapes, but there's still a sense of texture, of the hand at work. Check out the little red circle right at the top of the central panel. It's so small, but it draws your eye, and suddenly, you have a focal point in all this abstract space. And the way he's framed the central panel with these smaller shapes, it's like looking through a window, or maybe a keyhole. You know, I’m reminded of Lois Dodd’s landscapes when I look at this, in the way he can find a kind of otherworldly beauty in the everyday. It's not about being perfect; it's about being honest and seeing where the paint takes you.
