Reijer Stolk sketched this 'Plattegrond van een gebouw', or 'Floor Plan of a Building' in English, with pencil on paper. Stolk's life spanned a transformative period marked by both world wars and significant social upheaval. While this sketch provides a glimpse into architectural design, it also invites us to reflect on the context in which Stolk created it. Considering the artist died in 1945, during the aftermath of the Second World War, what might this building have represented to him? Perhaps safety, community or a place for new beginnings? The simple lines and geometric shapes evoke a sense of modernism, a movement which sought to break away from traditional forms and embrace innovation. Yet, the sketch also carries a sense of vulnerability, as if the building exists only as a fragile idea. As you stand here, consider what this floor plan represents to you. Does it evoke feelings of hope, nostalgia, or perhaps a longing for a world rebuilt?
