Elina Brotherus made this photograph, ‘Model Study 9,’ sometime in the late 20th or early 21st century. The cool palette of blues and greys, contrasted against the pale skin and the warm tones of the wooden pier, create an unsettling calmness. The composition is so carefully arranged, yet there’s a certain modesty in the way the artist allows the scene to unfold naturally. There’s a textural contrast between the smoothness of the skin, the rough wood and the rippling water. Look at the way the light glints off the surface of the lake, creating these tiny little reflective marks that echo the organic shapes on the model’s back. These shapes feel accidental, like small pieces of nature have attached themselves to the model's skin. Brotherus’s work often plays with the themes of identity, landscape, and the human form, in a way that reminds me of the quiet introspection in the paintings of Vilhelm Hammershøi. Both artists seem interested in the idea of visual ambiguity, embracing the idea that art doesn’t always need to offer clear answers.
