This book cover, "Die zweite Jahresgabe des Kreises graphischer Kunstler und Sammler", was printed anonymously, and you can tell that the artist was thinking about art-making as a process! The surface feels so tactile, doesn’t it? The colours are pretty limited, just shades of reddish-brown and cream, but the artist really made the most of them. Looking closer, you see the texture of the print, how the ink sits on the page, slightly raised, slightly imperfect. Like a linocut. And it’s not just flat colour, you can see the marks of the artist's tools that gives it real depth. There's one motif, a curly 'K' that almost looks like a question mark or even a dancing figure, with little leafy squiggles tucked into its arms. And each 'K' feels slightly different, each one a little experiment. You get the sense that the artist saw art as a kind of ongoing conversation. Like maybe a nod to folks like William Morris, but who knows? It's one of those pieces that invites you to make up your own mind.
