Curatorial notes

This “Diligence Reise-Schein” (Stagecoach ticket) was made in 1823, by an anonymous artist, and printed on paper. Consider this small piece of paper as a vestige of a time when travel was an event, restricted to certain classes of people. The ticket itself embodies a sense of privilege and mobility. It suggests a narrative of journeys, encounters, and the social dynamics of early 19th-century travel. Who was J. Dr. Thorbecke? What position or privilege did they hold in society, that they were able to purchase such a ticket from Giessen to Kassel? In the early 19th century, class distinctions shaped who had the opportunity to travel and experience the world beyond their immediate surroundings. The “Bemerkungen” (Remarks) at the bottom restrict requests for tips made by the coachmen, packers, and postillions. Think of the emotional implications of the document. It is a literal and figurative vehicle that reflects the relationship between social mobility and cultural identity.
