This silver basin was created by Paulus Willemsz. van Vianen, and it depicts the tale of Diana and Actaeon. Here, Diana, goddess of the hunt, is surprised by Actaeon while bathing. In her wrath, she transforms him into a stag, leading to his demise at the hands of his own hounds. The theme of transformation carries deep psychological weight, reflecting humanity's constant negotiation between our primal instincts and civilized selves. The story of Actaeon appears throughout art history: in ancient Roman frescoes, Renaissance paintings, and even contemporary works. Each reiteration reflects cultural anxieties about transgression, punishment, and the precariousness of human identity. Notice how the dogs, symbols of loyalty, become instruments of destruction. This paradox reveals our subconscious fears about the animalistic impulses lurking beneath the surface of reason. As you gaze upon this basin, consider how these archetypal symbols continue to resonate, reminding us of the eternal dance between order and chaos, desire and consequence.

Paulus van Vianen was celebrated for his unrivalled silver reliefs. This dish shows the goddess Diana being surprised by the huntsman Actaeon. She changes him into a stag: his hat is already sprouting antlers. The kwab style is used in many forms in the splendid, broad border, which commands as much attention as the scene it surrounds. The story depicted on the inside of this basin is continued on the reverse. Actaeon, transformed into a stag, is killed by his fellow huntsmen and devoured by his hounds. Never before had the underside of a dish been embellished with another scene. The ornament is even more prominent than on the front. The basin’s feet are veritable kwab sculptures.
