This miniature portrait of Jacob Stuart, later King James I of England, was created by an anonymous artist when Jacob was about ten years old. Born into the tumultuous world of 16th-century Scottish royalty, his early life was marked by political intrigue and religious conflict. As a male child, his destiny was predetermined and symbolized in the detailed attire of the portrait. The ruff and decorative hat are markers of wealth and power. Yet, seeing the image now, we might reflect on the complexities of his identity. James acceded to the throne of England, uniting the crowns. His reign saw both significant cultural achievements and growing tensions between the monarchy and Parliament. In viewing this portrait we can see how James's early experiences shaped his complex and often contradictory approach to governance, and his role in shaping early modern Britain.
