This untitled artwork by Tiberiy Szilvashi is executed with thick layers of paint. The texture is built up in such a way that the surface almost becomes like a relief sculpture. The artist’s hand is very much present. It's clear the emphasis is on the materiality of paint itself, not an illusionistic scene. The qualities of substance, texture, weight, color, and form, play a primary role in conveying meaning. It looks like Szilvashi applied the paint quite liberally and directly, perhaps even using tools more associated with construction than fine art. The deep teal color dominates, with small glimpses of orange underneath, creating an almost geological effect of strata. We can appreciate the physical labor and creative decisions that went into this work by seeing how the artist coaxed such a tactile presence out of simple paint. This piece challenges the traditional hierarchy between "high" art and the kind of material engagement we often associate with craft.
