Nicholas Gorid made this drawing of a sofa sometime in the 20th century, and it feels like such a gentle thing. You know, the pale greens and browns are almost edible, like pistachio ice cream with chocolate sauce! Looking at the piece, it’s really about color and line. There’s this great tension between the soft, yielding curves of the sofa itself and the rigid geometry of its frame, which really brings a sense of balance to the image. Notice how the green of the fabric is built up in layers, creating a subtle, shimmering effect, particularly on the cushion. It almost looks like the sofa is glowing from within. It reminds me a little of some of David Hockney’s drawings. Both artists are interested in capturing the everyday, but with a real sense of warmth and intimacy. Art is just a way of seeing, right? This piece gives me a whole new way to look at a sofa!
