Nicholas Gorid made this study of a sofa with watercolor and graphite on paper. It’s one of those paintings that feels both precise and dreamy. I imagine Gorid hunched over the paper, carefully building up the sofa's form with layer upon layer of pigment. Look at how he makes the green fabric appear to shimmer. The paint is thin, almost translucent, giving the sofa an ethereal quality. It reminds me of the way Fairfield Porter captured the light in his interiors, that same sense of quiet observation. The lines of the sofa feel both classical and a bit quirky, a tension that I often explore in my own work. It makes you wonder, how many other artists have sat on sofas just like this, sketching and dreaming? We are all in conversation, across time.
