Genesis The Exodus to the Ark 2013

Joe Machine created "Genesis The Exodus to the Ark" using paint on canvas. I like the way the animals become a pattern at the bottom, with their ochre fur and spots. I wonder about the painting process, imagining Joe Machine mixing his colors, figuring out the perspective, and how to layer the figures in the foreground. Maybe he started with that massive figure at the top left, pointing towards the ark like a tour guide, and then built the composition around it. I want to see him wrestling with the figures, pushing them around in the painting, trying to get the balance right. That blue robe is amazing, it's like he’s channeling some old master but making it his own thing entirely. Painters are always in conversation, picking up where someone else left off, riffing on their ideas, and pushing them in new directions. It’s an ongoing dance across time.
