This is a painting called Faridun sees Iraj's coffin by Ahmad Musa, made in around 1320. Here we see a funeral procession in the Persian courtly style. The flattened perspective and bright colors are typical of manuscript illumination from this time, made for consumption in elite circles. What can this image tell us about the social structures of its time? Well, the story illustrates dynastic conflict in the royal family, it would have served as both entertainment and instruction to its patrons. The image doesn't directly critique any institution. Rather, it performs and reinforces courtly culture. To fully understand this image, we need to look at the history of manuscript production, courtly patronage, and the conventions of Persian painting. Only then can we fully appreciate the world in which this image was created and consumed.
