Biography
Wolfgang Paalen (1905-1959) was an Austrian Surrealist painter and sculptor who gained recognition for his contributions to the movement. He was known for his distinctive style characterized by dreamlike landscapes, biomorphic forms, and ethereal figures. Paalen's works often explored themes of the subconscious, primitive archetypes, and the relationship between humans and nature. He moved between Europe and Mexico throughout his career, and his artistic approach evolved to encompass a range of mediums and techniques, including painting, sculpture, and collage. His sculptures, like "The Umbrella" (1943), are particularly noteworthy for their unusual organic shapes and textural experimentation.
