Biography
William Harrison Scarborough (1812-1871) was an American portrait painter, primarily known for his miniature portraits. Scarborough's work is characterized by a delicate touch and a focus on capturing the sitter's likeness. His portraits, often executed in watercolor on ivory, were popular among the upper classes of his time. These intimate works, like the two displayed here, offer a glimpse into the fashion and social customs of 19th century America.
