Vincenzo Foppa

Vincenzo Foppa (1427-1515) was an Italian painter, active in the late 15th century. He is best known for his religious works, such as the two paintings of Saint Paul and Saint Ambrose shown here. Foppa’s work is characterized by its realistic depiction of figures, detailed rendering of textiles and objects, and strong sense of composition. He is considered a major figure in the transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance styles in Lombardy, influencing subsequent generations of artists.
