Biography
Utagawa Yoshitomi (1836–1870) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist known for his depictions of foreigners in Japan. Yoshitomi's work often portrays Westerners in traditional Japanese settings, showcasing their clothing, customs, and interactions with Japanese people. These prints are often humorous and satirical, reflecting a fascination with Western culture during the late Edo period. While Yoshitomi’s works are less well-known than those of his more famous contemporaries, his prints offer a unique window into Japanese perceptions of Westernization. His signature style is often characterized by bold outlines and a preference for vivid colors.
