Biography
Théodore Chassériau (1819-1856) was a French Romantic painter who was known for his expressive use of color and his interest in historical and mythological subjects. His style blended elements of Romanticism, Neoclassicism, and Orientalism. While he enjoyed success early in his career, Chassériau's art was not always appreciated during his lifetime, and he died young at the age of 37. His most famous work is "The Apotheosis of Homer" (1853), a large-scale painting that depicts Homer being crowned by the Muses.
