Biography
Silvestro Lega was an Italian painter, born in Modigliana in 1826 and who died in Florence in 1895. Lega’s paintings are known for their realism and their focus on everyday life, often depicting scenes of rural life, peasant workers and domestic interiors. His work was influenced by the Macchiaioli, a group of Italian artists who emphasized the use of "macchia" (spots or strokes of color) in their paintings. Lega is known for his accurate depictions of light and shadow, and for his emphasis on the quiet beauty of ordinary life. Lega’s works are in the collections of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Florence and the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome.
