Sesson Shūkei 雪村周継

Sesson Shūkei (1504-1589) was a Japanese painter of the Muromachi period, known for his ink paintings of landscapes and birds. His works are characterized by their elegant simplicity and evocative atmosphere, often employing the "haboku" technique, where ink is applied in a loose and free-flowing manner. Sesson's masterful use of negative space and suggestive brushstrokes create a sense of tranquility and depth in his compositions, which are considered to be among the finest examples of the "suiboku-ga" (ink wash painting) style in Japanese art.
