Biography
Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) was an American abstract expressionist painter known for his bold use of black and color. His "Elegies to the Spanish Republic" series, begun in 1949, exemplifies his signature style, featuring large black ovals on stark backgrounds. Motherwell's work often explored themes of death, memory, and the human condition. He was a leading figure in the New York School and his work is considered a cornerstone of American postwar art.
