Biography
Robert Jacob Gordon was a Dutch artist and soldier, born in Doesburg in 1743. He is best known for his detailed drawings of the flora and fauna of South Africa, where he served as a military commander. Gordon's precise and often life-size depictions of animals, including the hippopotamus, turtle, and crab, are invaluable contributions to scientific illustration and colonial history. His works offer a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of 18th-century South Africa. Gordon passed away in Cape Town in 1795.
