Biography
Richard Houston (1721-1775) was a British engraver who was known for his detailed and expressive portraits and animal scenes. He is best known for his portraits, as well as his engravings of racehorses and sporting subjects. Houston's work was often characterized by its meticulous detail and use of rich blacks and whites, which gave his engravings a sense of depth and realism. His style of engraving was also heavily influenced by the rococo movement of the 18th century. He is most noted for his engraving "The Matchless San Notion" (1754) which was owned by the famous racehorse breeder, John, Duke of Bedford.
