Biography
Pieter Lastman (1583-1633) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman who is primarily known for his historical and biblical scenes. Although not a prominent figure during his lifetime, Lastman is now recognized as an important influence on Rembrandt, who was his pupil for a brief period. The drawings above showcase Lastman’s mastery of figure drawing and his attention to detail. He often used chiaroscuro, a technique of contrasting light and shadow, to create dramatic effects in his works.
