Biography
Pieter de Witte, also known as Pieter van Aelst, was a Flemish painter and draughtsman active in the 16th and 17th centuries. De Witte is best known for his drawings, many of which depict religious scenes. The image provided depicts the biblical story of the Last Supper, a popular subject for many Renaissance artists. De Witte's drawing demonstrates his mastery of light and shadow, a technique known as chiaroscuro. De Witte was also a master of the human form and created detailed studies of figures, which are also seen in this piece.
