Biography
Otto van Veen (1556-1629) was a Flemish painter and draughtsman. He is best known for his large-scale history paintings and mythological scenes, often incorporating elements of Mannerist style. His work is characterized by its dramatic compositions, expressive figures, and rich color palettes. Van Veen was also a prolific draftsman, producing numerous preparatory sketches and studies for his paintings. The drawings are made using black chalk, red chalk, and white chalk and show his masterful handling of light and shadow. His most famous works include the “Allegory of the Dance of Love” in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels, and the “Triumph of the Gods” in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
