Biography
Otto van Veen (1556-1629) was a Flemish painter and draughtsman whose works were popular in his lifetime, but have since fallen out of favor. The influence of Mannerism is readily apparent in his paintings, with his figures often contorted and elongated. Van Veen's works generally depict historical or biblical subjects, and feature a detailed approach, with vivid colors and strong contrasts. While his work is characterized by a detailed approach, a sense of drama and tension can be seen in his paintings, which often feature dynamic compositions and expressive figures. He was also a prolific draughtsman, known for his detailed drawings of mythological and biblical themes.
