Biography
Nikolaos Gyzis (March 1, 1842 – January 4, 1901) was a Greek painter, known for his realistic and often melancholic depictions of everyday life in Greece. He was born in Greece but later moved to Munich, Germany where he studied under the renowned German artist Karl von Piloty. His paintings often feature scenes of poverty, hardship, and simple domesticity. One of his most famous works, "The Death of a Greek Hero" (1877), is a dramatic portrayal of a young man's death, and exemplifies Gyzis' use of dramatic lighting and emotive poses to draw the viewer into his scenes.
