Born in Munkács, Ukraine, he initially focused on genre scenes depicting everyday life. His works, often characterized by rich color palettes and meticulous detail, gained international acclaim. Munkácsy later shifted towards historical and religious themes, notably the monumental "Christ Before Pilate" (1881).
