Biography
Matthys van den Bergh (1617-1687) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman. He was born in Ieper and later moved to Alkmaar. His drawings are largely characterized by their precise and detailed renderings of figures and landscapes. They often depict scenes from mythology and history, as seen in his sketches of classical figures, and his drawing of a mythological scene with figures near a pond. He was a skilled draughtsman who used a variety of materials, including chalk, pen and ink, and red chalk. He is known for his drawings that are preparatory works for paintings.
