Ludwig Gottlieb Portman (1772-1828) was a German engraver who specialized in line engravings. Born in Darmstadt, he produced detailed and often dramatic engravings on historical and mythological themes, often using stipple techniques for finer details. His works include engravings of classical and biblical subjects, such as the scene of "The Burning of the Books" and a poignant depiction of a warrior on horseback. He is also known for his engraving of a female figure representing the concept of "Feeling." Portman's work is characterized by a sense of narrative and a skillful use of light and shadow.
