Biography
Leonaert Bramer (1596-1674) was a Dutch artist who is known for his drawings and paintings. The drawings are often in black chalk and show a range of subjects from classical mythology to scenes of everyday life. Bramer was a contemporary of Rembrandt, and his work reflects the influence of this famous master. His figures are rendered with a sense of realism and emotion, and he captures the play of light and shadow in a way that is both naturalistic and dramatic. Bramer's work is rarely seen in museums but can be found in private collections, and these drawings show a master of the art of draftsmanship.
