Biography

Jusepe de Ribera (1591 - 1652) was a Spanish Baroque painter known for his dramatic, realistic style. He was a master of chiaroscuro, a technique that uses strong contrasts of light and dark to create a sense of depth and drama. Ribera's paintings often depict religious subjects, particularly scenes of suffering and martyrdom. His works are characterized by their intense emotionality and detailed anatomical accuracy. Some of his most famous works include "The Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew" and "The Flaying of Marsyas." Ribera's influence can be seen in the work of later Baroque painters such as Diego Velázquez.
